Chris Taylor

I am a street and portrait photographer based in Bristol, UK.

I look for real people and situations. Eye contact and handshakes. I shoot in natural light, largely on 35mm film for personal projects and digital/120 for commissions. Bristol has been home for almost 10 years now but I travel light, often gravitating toward London and looking forward to seeing and shooting more of Europe throughout 2020. I miss Los Angeles and much of America. I would love to travel back in time and put a camera in the hands of my eighteen year old self but they were occupied with music.

in 2019, my portrait of Eva Petulengro was published by Hoxton Mini Press in the British Journal of Photography’s ‘Portrait of Britain 2’, and again featured in BJP’s The Portrait Issue, which was a proud moment that I see as a turning point in my career.

In the latter part of 2019, I also had work exhibited at the Arnolfini through an open call with The Martin Parr Foundation and again through Loophole.

My first street portraiture exhibition alongside fellow photographer Jake Davis was in August of 2018. Based on the people of Stokes Croft, Bristol and largely made up of unseen work, it was a pleasure to exhibit in CoExist, Hamilton House, right in the heart of Stokes Croft, Bristol where all of the images were made. For the exhibition we also produced an accompanying zine that is still available in limited quantities.

As I work toward my first photo book, I have work featured in future issues of 5.18 and Wassup zine and plan on releasing my own series of zines, each representing a different time period and facet of my work.

I share a large percentage of my work online but have come to the realisation that it comes alive in print, more body than ghost.

I am inspired by the artists and photographers around me and influenced by the greats, Robert Frank, Elliott Erwitt, Don McCullin, Vivian Maier, William Eggleston and Martin Parr.
